LT crops up in Schuylkill BY SHEILA MILLER HARRISBURG Another outbreak of the contagious disease laryngotracheitis, LT. has been identified in a Schuylkill County layer operation, reports chief veterinarian Max A. Vanßuskirk, head of the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Animal Industry. This LT outbreak joins three other reports of the disease in flocks in Quarryville, Lancaster County and York Springs, Adams County! Lancaster Farming, Dec. 19,1981, Al). The two flocks that were affected in Adams County were brought . under control, notes Vanßuskirk. “Since LT usually hits when birds in a broiler operation are marketable, the disease is con trolled by moving the birds out. The houses are then disinfected and new birds can be moved in within a few weeks,” he said. This was the procedure followed in the Adams broilers that had the 'disease. ' “The Adams County layer operation is vaccinating for LT, therefore the consequences of the disease are reduced,” reports the chief veterinarian. “The impact of LT in non-protected, young birds is immediate they actually suf focate from the disease. “The birds create an unusual amount of mucous in the upper trachea. Their tracheas then become ulcerated and may bleed, with the birds shaking their heads and sneezing out bloody mucous as D FERTILIZER PRICE LIST i $lO discount on Ammoniated products only. Howevei in older birds, it shows itself through reduced produc tion.” Vanßuskirk also said the I Lan caster outbreak has been dealt with by the operation. He pointed out that in this case the affected pullets were “moved to the layer operation since it was decided losses in production would be minimal." Concerning the most recent outbreak in Schuylkill County, Vanßuskirk reveals ~ that there were “no great losses” in flock numbers. The disease seemed to be confined to mostly those birds that were finishing their first laying. “These birds probably will be culled with the remainder of the flock being vaccinated. The situation is under control,” he states. Reassuringly, Vanßuskirk comments, “We don’t have a disease that’s-- desimating our flocks like we did in 1978.” At that time, Lancaster County alone had 750,000 birds placed under quarantine. Other symptoms of LT in a flock include watery eyes, coughing, wheezing, and twisting necks. The disease, which results from a viral infection, can result in a 5-70 percent loss in flock numbers depending on its severity and bird conditions. Vanßuskirk stresses that while LT is highly contagious in broiler laying chickens . and 50 lb. Bagged Prices F. 0.8. Ohio Warehouse. The disease does not affect egg quality or edibility. Since the severe. outbreak in 1978, producers have been en couraged to vacciriate for LT using an eyedrop-vaccination when the birds are 7-8 weeks old, followed by a booster vaccine which can be administered through a spray or in the water when the birds are between 16-18 weeks old. LT is easily spread by rodents, wild birds and people. To safe guard an operation from possible exposure, producers should follow these recommendations; —Do not visit other poultry farms; —lnsist that salesmen, feed deliverymen, egg customers, and pickup people stay out of house; —Use all-in, all-out operations where possible; ” —Lock all poultry houses; —Provide obvious, outside receptacles for feed slips, invoices and other messages; —Know your pullet source and its vaccination program; —Consider starting a vac cination program for LT; —Submit any suspicious birds to a diagnostic laboratory; —Control rodents and stray dogs or cats; and —Contact the flock supervisor or Extension agent in the county if you suspect LT in your flock.
