“We were very pleased to
receive the medals,” said owner
and winemaker Dick Nissley. “The
competition was much tougher this
year,” he added.
Out of a record number of 792
wines judged at the Eastern Wine
Competition, only 180 were
awarded medals, 19 of them gold.
One hundred wineries from 22
states east of the Rockies and two
provinces of Canada entered wine
in'the competition.
While Millrace White was one of
seven specially selected wines
served at the five-course banquet,
Nissley’s apple wine was also
served but not in a glass. It was
an ingredient in the Roast Ten
derloin Normandy, developed by
Steve Dumas of the Greystone Inn
at Ithaca, New York, who acted as
chef for the conference.
Last year, Nissley’s big winner
was Aurora 1979 which received a
gold medal, while seven other
Nissley wines received silver or
bronze medals.
One of Nissley’s vinifera wines,
recently was served at the

you happen to see about the need
for a will and most people will
reply, “Sure, it’s a good idea,
everybody should have one.”
What is a will? Essentially it’s a
legal document which says who is
to receive any portion or all of your
estate or personal property. In
addition, you can name a personal
representative to act on your
behalf during the estate settlement
and, if necessary, a guardian for
aiiy minor children. If the minor
children are to receive property
from the estate, a guardian of their
property can also be named.
What if you die without a will? In
this situation, your property will be
distributed according to the In
terstate Law of Pennsylvania. This
is a schedule set up by the
legislation for the distribution of
the deceased’s property.
“Generally, this schedule
follows family lines in determining
where the property is to go,” says
John Becker, Penn State assistant
professor of agricultural law
Extension.
For example, if a husband dies
owning a $60,000 certificate of
deposit in his own name, and he is
survived by his wife and their two
children, then his estate, after the

The occasion was a luncheon
held on November 4 for First Lady
Nancy Reagan prior to the
ceremony where she presented her
Inaugural Ball gown to the
Smithsonian Institution.
Distribution to six wine shops in
the Washington area is handled by
Nissley’s daughter Mary Lee. “We
are gradually expanding our
market,” she commented. “We
also hope to establish some wine
shops soon under the new Penn
sylvania legislation.”
Recently passed House Bill 357
permits a Pennsylvania wine
producer to establish three
locations for wine sales in addition
to the winery.
Visitors are welcome at the
Nissley winery located near
Bainbridge. The stone-arch
winery, built by Dick Nissley and
his son John, houses the large
-stainless steel tanks used for
fermenting and storing the wines.
A tour of the winery also includes
the vineyards tended by John and a
sample tasting of Nissley’s award
winning wines.
Making a will
payment of debts and expenses,
would be distributed in this
manner:
—The surviving spouse would
receive $30,000 plus one-half of the
balance of the estate. The
remainder of the estate would be
shared equally by the two children.
—But if the children were
children of a prior marriage of the
deceased husband, then:
—The surviving spouse would
receive only one-half of the estate.
—The remainder of the estate
would be shared equally by the two
children.
This is but one example of how
the Interstate Law provides for the
distribution of an individual’s
estate. The major advantage in
having a will prepared is that the
individual concerned determines
who will receive his or her
property after death.
