    LT alert
(Continued from Page Al)
that while LT is highly contagious,
in broiler and laying chickens it
does not affect other poultry, such
as waterfowl or turkeys. And the
disease does not affect the ‘health’
of the eggs produced by the
chickens.
Since the severe outbreak in
1978, producers have been en
couraged to vaccinate for LT using
an eyedrop-vaccination when the
birds are 7-8 weeks old, followed by
a booster vaccine which can be
administered through a spray or in
the water when the birds are
between 16-18 weeks old.

Vanßuskirk pointed out that
most commercial operations are
aware, of LT and how to deal with
the problem, but noted most
“backyard” chicken producers
would not recognize the disease.
“These backyard flocks of 50
birds could lose 2 or 3 that seemed
to be sneezing before they died and
never suspect LT. These flocks
harbor the disease and the birds
become carriers,” said Van-
Buskirk. “That’s when it can get to
a commercial flock.”
Irwin pointed out that “for some
time, small producers were given
free vaccine to protect their
flocks.”
LT is easily spread by rodents,
