Lucille Horner
A 16-year-old Pennsylvania girl,
who learned how to properly store
leftovers and other foods so that
they would not spoil, has been
named one of six national winners
in the 4-H food conservation and
safety program.
Lucille Homer, Rt. 3, Box 250,
Somerset, received a $l,OOO
scholarship.
The six winners were presented
their awards by Reynolds Metals
Company, sponsor of the program.
Homer, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Charles B. Homer Sr., is a
fCygh school senior and plans to
major in home economics in
college.
“Even with an older brother,
there still are some leftovers and if
they are properly stored, they can
be re-used,” the Somerset County
girl said. “Foods destined for the
refrigerator should be placed in
containers with lids and stored
promptly.”
The 4-H’er learned how to plan
menus for backpacking and
bikehiking trips and how to wrap
them so that they can be safely
served. She also learned how to
prepare and serve food safely
outdoors, using a charcoal grill.

and then preserves and dries them
for use in arrangements and
pictures, has been named one of
eight national winners m the 4-H
gardening program.
Kathleen Wychock, 15 Grove St.,
Mountaintop, received a $l,OOO
scholarship.
Her awarcT'was presented by
Ortho Consumer Products
Division, Chevron Chemical
Company, sponsor of the 4-H
gardening program.
Wychock, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs Joseph Wychock, is a high
school senior and plans a career in
ornamental horticulture or ex
tension youth work.

The 4-H’er put her gardening
techniques to work earlier this
year when her family purchased a
50-foot lot next to the family home.
She has been using knowledge
gained in 4-H to make it attractive.
Wychock also has grown a wide
variety of vegetables in her
vegetable garden.
Her project work led to an in
terest in horticulture and last year
she trained the horticulture team
that placed first in state com
petition.

Shelly Wnsley, Rt. 3, Troy,
received a $l,OOO scholarship.
Her award was presented by
Reader’s Oigest, sponsor of the 4-
H leadership program.
Wnsley, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Luther T. Wnsley, is a
freshman at Clarion State College
at Clarion. She plans to earn a
degree in business administration.
She served as a member of the
State Leadership Council and has
been a long-time leader in her
county’s 4-H Council. She helped
plan radio spots to promote the fair
and National 4-H Week.

An 18-year-old Pennsylvania
youth, who made an embryology
study and completed a chick
metabolism experiment, has been
named one of six national winners
in the 4-H veterinary science
scholarship.

scholarship.
His award was presented by The
Upjohn Company, sponsor of the 4-
H veterinary science program.

Clarence R. Bryan Jr., is a
freshman at Pennsylvania State
University and plans to become a
veterinarian He is a 10-year 4-
H’er.
The Delaware County youth’s
metabolism experiment consisted
of comparing the growth effects of
a commercial chick ration to the
ration of straight cracked com on
the performance of Leghorn
chicks.
The 4-H’er said he has put his
veterinary science knowledge to
work in raising swme, sheep,
chickens, veal calves, dogs, a cat
and a horse and her foal.
David Detter
A 17-year-old Pennsylvania
youth, who designed and made
hanging planters and lamps, has
been named one of six national
winners in the 4-H wood science
program.
David Detter, 6631 Old Carlisle
Road, Dover, received a $l,OOO
scholarship.
