National winners share $7OOO in scholarships
CHICAGO, ILL. Seven Penn
sylvania 4-H’ers claimed $7,000 in
scholarships at the 60th National 4-
H Congress here this week. Each
was named a winner in programs
by National 4-H Council and
supervised by the Cooperative
Extension Service.
Selected for outstanding ac
complishments in 4-H projects and
activities, leadership develop
ment, personal growth and
community and civic respon
sibility, 285 winners nationwide
and in Puerto Rico, shared $265,000
in eduational grants.
Pennsylvania’s national winners
were;
Tom Reybum
A 17-year-old Pennsylvania
youth, who used a puppet show to
teach conservation to has
been named one of six national
wmners in the 4-H conservation of

Tom Reybum, 449 Orlando Ave.,
State College, received a $l,OOO
scholarship.
His award was presented by
John Deere, sponsor of the 4-H
conservation program.
Reyburn, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Jerry Reybum, is a high school
senior and plans a career in en
vironmental or bio-medical
engineering.
The Centre County youth used
puppets to bring the Dr. Seuss
conservation story, The Lorax, to
life on a puppet stage. He said the
children were entertained, as well
as educated on why conservation is
necessary.
The nine-year 4-H’er also
supervised 200 elementary school
children in planting fir seedlings as
a windbreak around their school.
Pennsylvania 4-H’ers
Karen Kuntz
An 18-year-old Pennsylvania
girl, who appeared on television to
advise people how to compare
products before buying, has been
named one of six national winners
in the 4-H consumer education
program.
Karen Kuntz, 108 Longs Gap
Road, Carlisle, received a $l,OOO
scholarship.
The six winners were presented
their awards by Montgomery
Ward & Co., sponsor of the 4-H
consumer education program.
Kuntz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Cornelius Kuntz, is a high school
senior and plans to become a
commercial artist. She is a nine
year 4-H’er.
The Cumberland County girl has
become an expert on consumerism
and used television in her public
education program. “As a whole,
