McConaughey relinquishes
nat’l Southdown crown
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Mixed
emotions were apparent as
Darlene McConaughey of
Smicksburg, Pennsylvania,
crowned the 1981-82 National
Southdown Queen last week in
Louisville, Kentucky.
Darlene confessed she is glad the
busy schedule ot being a national
queen is over, but she will miss
meeting new people. Darlene
served one year as Pennsylvania
Southdown queen before wearing
the national crown.
As National Southdown Queen,
Darlene attended several county
and state shows, the Midwest Show
and Sale in Sedaha, Missouri, and
the National Southdown Show and
Sale in Louisville, Ky. She also
visited elementary schools telling
about sheep and wool and
arranged a visit by a junior church
group to her farm.
Darlene’s major emphasis
during her reign was to promote
activities for junior Southdown
breeders, stating she feels this is
where the future of the breed lies.
Darlene developed a pamphlet
telling of all the junior Southdown
contests and activities and built an
exhibit which she earned along to
all Southdown activities.
This is not the end of promoting
sheep for Darlene, however. She
plans to continue developing her
a ward-winning and Suffolk flocks.
