HARRISBURG - The
cooperative spent hen signup
program being conducted by the
Pennsylvania Poultry Federation
Egg Council and the Pennsylvania
Fanners’ Association now tops
seven million birds.
The new total was reported by
Joe Buck, of the PFA staff, and
John Hoffman, executive
secretary of the Poultry
Federation.
Coupled with the 2.1 million buds
previously in the program,
PACMA’s spent fowl marketing
cooperative now numbers well
over nine million of the state’s 17
million spent hens.
Under a one-year triai program
to attempt to improve the pnce
that egg producers receive for
their spent hens, the Poultry
Federation has cooperated with
PFA to increase the producer
signup, particualacly among agri
business firms involved in the egg
producing industry.
The birds are marketed through
PACMA’s agent, FACTS - Far
mers Agricultural Cooperative
Trading Society.
FACTS is the marketing affiliate
of the Massachusetts Farm
Bureau Federation and markets
spent hens for producers m
Massachusetts, Maine, Rhode
Island, Connecticut, New Hamp
shire, Vermont, New York and
New Jersey.
