Malcolm Sonnen was honored individually as Outstanding Young Farmer for 1981 and was recognized for tus service to the organization during tus term as president for the past two years. Another dairyman was honored for his Outstanding Achievement in Crop Production at the Thur sday evening event. Herman Sauter, Myerstown, turned in the first place samples for com quality and yield, along with the best haylage sample. His com was a long season Pioneer 3184 entry, which he planted on May 10 after con ventionally preparing his limestone ground. This is the third year of a three-year rotation for his com. The field, which didn’t require liming, received about 450 pounds of 15-15-15 fertilizer plowed down, with an additional 100 pounds of tnple-15 in the row. For weed and insect control, Sauter used a combination of Lasso and atrazme and Oyfonate. Sauter’s haylage sample was straight alfalfa of' several varieties. Leon Kime, of Kline Springs Farm, Newmans town, bad the top entry for hay quality. The sample was a combination of three established alfalfa stands from which four cuttings were'taken. Leon’s father, Norman Kline, R 2 Myerstown, also had some winning entries in the October-September Young Farmer contest. Khnedell Farm was recognized for their first place com silage entry and their herd’s production increase of 2,701 pounds. Bennetch Brothers, R 2 Myer stown, had the fust-place 2-year old fat record, along with the top 3- year-old milk record. Willow Maple Farms, Newmanstown, turned in two winning entries 2 year-old milk and aged cow milk. And the Raymond Getz family took first place in the aged cow fat category. - Swine pioducer and Pioneer seed corn salesman Richard Kreider, Lebanon, received the 1981 Honorary Young Farmer Award.
