Ag Arena consignments top 200 mark
UNIVERSITY PARK - Over 225
head of dairy, beef, sheep, and
swine have been consigned to an
all-breeds benefit sale to aid Penn
State’s Ag Arena fund raising
project.
Proceeds of the sale, to be held
December 11 in Harrisburg’s
Farm Show Complex, will go
toward the construction of a
190,000-square-foot Ag Arena to be
located adjacent to Beaver
Stadium on the University Park
Campus.
"Persons consigning animals to
the benefit sale are being asked to
donate at'least 50 percent of the
sale price to the,proposed arena,”
says Milford Heddleson, College of
Agriculture coordinator of en
vironmental quality affairs and co
chairman, of the fund raising'
campaign.
Dairy cattle will be sold at II
a.m.; beef at noon; swine at 7
p.m.; and sheep at 7:30 p.m. Dairy
and swine will be sold in the small
arena and beef and sheep in an
improvised arena m the poultry
barn in the Karm Show Complex.
Pointing out the need for the
$900,000 facility, Heddleson notes
that the growth of student interest
in agriculture has placed stress on
already inadequate faculties. The
Ag Arena wiU provide for classes
and laboratories. It also will be
used for various statewide shows,
conferences, and sales.
“Many outstanding registered
animals are consigned,” the co
chairman points out. "There is a
special selection of registered
Holstems including three out
standing bulls. There also is a
superior selection of beef cattle,
sheep and swine.”

In a meeting Monday with
personnel from all bureaus in the
State Agriculture Department,
Hallowed learned what, if any,
affect these problems would have
on essential food inspection and
grading services in the Com
monwealth.
He said, "farmers can be
assured that their milk, meat and
poultry products and other com
modities will be checked by state
or federal inspectors so that the
products can be shipped to
market.”
He added, ‘'Consumers should be
aware that the State Department
of Agriculture is doing everything
to make certain, as always, only
the safest and highest quality food
products are offered for sale in
Pennsylvania.”
Department personnel,
Hallowell noted, are in touch with
USDA officials to coordinate the
completion of all necessary ser
vices.
