Ayrshire
plan spring sale
NEW ENTERPRISE - Because
ot an increasing demand for
Ayrshire calves from 4-H’ers and
FFA members, a four-man
committee, comprised of central
Pennsylvania and southeastern
Pennsylvania Ayrshire breeders,
is investigating the prospects for a
spring consignment sale, said
committee member Milt
Brubaker, Lititz.
“We get a Jot ot calls in the
spring from 4-H and FFA mem
bers for calves of showing age,”
explained Brubaker, also
Executive Secretary lor the state
Ayrshire Association.
Brubaker, Earl Keefer,
Millersburg, John Ocker, Ship
pensburg and Cletus Rhodes,
Alexandria were appointed to the
sale committee during the annual
meeting of the- Central Penn
sylvania Ayrshire Club, last
Saturday at the farm of Carl and
Curt Sweinhart The committee is
expected 'to report its findings
during the Farm Show meeting on
January 12.
A co-sponsorpd sale is not new to
the southeastern and central clubs,
as both groups have held an annual
Firecracker Ayrshire Con
signment Sale in July. The next
Firecracker sale has been set for
July 7,1982 in Carlisle.
Slide show depicts farm problems
WEST CHESTER - The Upper
Brandywine Regional Planning
Commission is currently
scheduling a slide show that
demonstrates the importance of,
and problems with, farming and
farmland in the area. The
following tunes and places have
been reserved: Nov.'24, East
Brandywine Township Bldg., 7
p.m.; Dec. 3, West Nantmeal
breeders
Regarding the proposed spring
sale, Brubaker explained that the
committee is seeking a new
location instead of using the
Firecracker site or the state
association’s Keystone Classic site
in Lancaster. A different location,
said Brubaker, will possibly stir up
more interest in the Ayrsfiire
breed in other areas of the state.
The proposed sale will feature
calves of showing age as well as
older animals, Brubaker said ,
During the business portion of
the meeting, the club voted to
continue sending the Ayrshire
Digest to 13 Vo-Ag schools in the
area In addition, members voiced
their support ol the Pennsylvania
All-American Dairy Show next
year. The club voted for providing
one-half of the premium money for
the Produce of Dam class during
the Ayrshire competition.
Before the meeting ended, club
members filled several slots on the
executive slate. The new officers
are. John Ocker-president; Carl
Sweinhart-vice president; Jim
Laughlm, Chambersburg-secret
ary-treasurer, Robert Wilkins,
Saxon and Cletus Rhodes-two-year
directors; Sam Diehl, Bedford and
Earl Keefer-one-year directors;
Sam Diehl-Pa. state director.
