Currently, about 140 medications
are derived trom cattle glands.
One of the most important and best
known pharmaceuticals is insulin,
a drug used to treat diabetes.
There are 5 million diabetics in the
U.S. alone, and at least one-tourth
ot them require insulin daily to
regulate their blood sugar levels.
In humans and in cattle, the
pancreas gland naturally
manufactures insulin, but it takes
the glands trom 1,500 slaughtered
animals to produce only 1 ounce of
insulin refined tor human use.
Another drug, clinically called
corticotropin and more commonly
known as ACTH, is available
synthetically, but generally
manufacturers derive ACTH from
the pituitary gland ot livestock.
Used primarily in treating human
adrenal gland problems, ACTH is a
very valuable pharmaceutical but
not so easily obtainable.
The pituitary gland of an
average steer is tiny, weighing less
than a tenth of a pound, and 10,000
glands are required to refine just
one pound of ACTH for human use.
In 1976, the wholesale price for a
single cattle pituitary gland was
only 11 cents. But researchers are
quick to point out that some im
portant byproduct benefits simply
cannot be measured in dollars.

solve animal
waste problems
WEST CHESTER -
Management of animal waste or
manure in Chester County is
becoming important, reports
Harry Barnett, conservation
technician with the Soil Con
servation Service in West Chester.
What to do with the manure in
the winter months has been the
biggest question. Store it is the
answer. By storing it over the
winter months, you can apply it in
the spring just before planting,
Barnett says.
“Consider what happens when
you spread manure in the winter
on frozen or snow-covered ground
and get a heavy ram. Most of the
manure is carried off into the
streams resulting in stream
pollution, and the loss of organic
fertilizer. Tb ! s problem can be

solved by proper manure storage,”
he explains.
“Not only are the winter months
critical, but there are critical
months in the summer, too. What
do you do with the manure when
most fields are in crops?” the SCS
technician asks.
“All over Chester County, you
can see farmers solving their
manure problems. In the Elverson
area alone during the past year,
five of these storage systems were
installed.”
The U.S. Soil Conservation
Service can provide technicial
assistance in the development of a
waste management system. For

local Soil Conservation Service
office.
