LANCASTER For a productive
year ot hard work, lost sleep, bad
nerves and frustration mingled
with elation, the members ot
Lancaster County’s 4-H dairy clubs
were recognized at the annual 4-H
dairy banquet, Monday night at the
Good 'N Plenty Restaurant, here
Glenn Shirk, Extension dairy
specialist and coordinator ot the
program, briefly described to the
audience a portion ot the work
involved in the dairy clubs, ending
by saying, "it makes you aware
that 4-H really is a learn by doing
project.”
Presiding over the head table
and in attendance tor the honors
were. Connie Balmer, president ot
the Guernsey Club, Steve Kautt
man, president of the Holstein
Club, Kevin Eshlemen, vice
president ot the Ayrshire, Brown
Swiss and Jersey Club, Anita
Brommer, secretary tor the same
club, and Karen Schmuck,
treasurer tor the same Deb
Greider, Lancaster County dairy
princess and alternate state
princess, was also on hand to
distribute awards
Special guests in the audience
included county commissioners
Robert Boyer and James Huber
and Donna Lucidi, the new county
4-H agent.
The tirst awards presented
program were those tor
judgmg team Top
individual in the county and a
member ot the Pennsylvania team
which placed third in Madison, Wt,
was Glenn Shenk ot Lititz.
Othei members ot the winning
team are Gerald Garber ot Willow
Street, top 4-H judge at the All
American judging torum, team
members Neal Crouse ot Stevens
and Leonard Stoltztus ot Gap.
Each membei ot the judging team
received a trophy
The other most coveted awards,
those of breed champions, were
awarded to these tive deserving 4-

tor Rocky Springs Robin in the
David Harnish of Quarryville was surprised when his name
was called to receive an award for 14 years volunteer service
to the Ayrshire, Brown Swiss and Jersey Club.

Kauffman, Elizabethtown, tor his
Holstien, Penn Springs Milestone
Ada, and Helen Arrowsmith tor
the Jersey that brought her grand
champion honors at the district
show
Three champion showmen
winners were announced In the
senior division was Connie Balmer
while junior honors went to Janice
Garber, Willow Street. The rookie
title went to Danny Welk ot
Strasburg.
Reserve champion showman
titles went to Jon Michael Eby ot
Gordonville tor his tirst year;
Cindy Trimble ot Peach Bottom tor
the junior division, and Steve
Kauttman tor the senior division
Project awards went to senior
and junior members, breed win
ners and tive additional members
as honorable mention tor high book
scores. The award is given tor top
book scores, management score,
interest, participation, record
keeping and showmanship skills

These four dairy 4-H’ers were honored for Witmer, Willow Street, for the Guernsey
having best owner-bred females at the annual breed; Helen Arrowsmith, Peach Bottom, for
dairy banquet. They are Steve Kauffman, the Jersey breed; and Karen Schmuck, Peach
Elizabethtown, for the Holstein breed; Mary Bottom, for the Ayrshire breed.

Income tax workshops coming Jan., Feb.
LANCASTER Penn State
Extension offices around the state
are gearing up for the 1982 Farm
Income Tax workshops, slated to
begin in January
The one-day workshops are
designed to help farmers and tax
practitioners keep up-to-date on
changes in the tax laws that affect
theag business
The cost of the workshop is $l7
per person, or $24 per couple, this
fee includes the cost of lunch and
materials.
