BlS— Lancaster Farming, Saturday, October 31,1981 Cloister FFA pu EPHRATA - The Cloister FFA Chapter’s pumpkin contest in the Ephrata Area School District was a “whopping” success. Pumpkins ranging up to just about as big and heavy as some of the contestants were raised in this year's contest. Grand prize wmner with the biggest - a 50-Ib. globular monster - was Kenny Zeyak, of the Lincoln Elementary School. In all, 63 students from sixth grades throughout the Ephrata Area School District took part in the contest. Last spring, the Cloister FFA Chapter distributed seeds and planting instructions to all fifth graders in the distret. The students were encouraged to raise their pumpkins and enter two of them in the contest. Categories of competition in cluded the biggest pumpkin and the best shaped. Ribbons were awarded for the first through sixth placmgs and trophies to all first place winners. Winners in the six elementary schools: Highland Elementary Heaviest - Amy Noller, 1. Best Shaped - Tracy Worley, 1; Sherry Sweigart, 2; Eric Usner, 3; Suzanne Horst, 4; Diana Zim merman, 5; Tracy Zimmerman, 6.' 3 Twin Valley FFA’ers enter competition ELVERSON Three members of the Twin Valley FFA chapter entered competition in Penn sylvania FFA Agricultural Proficiency Award Programs. Applications were submitted last spring to the state FFA office for judging. More than 100,000 FFA members compete annually in local proficiency award programs in 22 different areas. The best local applications are then submitted to each state FFA office for state competition. State winners compete for regional honors in the' four national FFA regions. Finally, each regional winner travels to Kansas City, Missouri to compete for national honors. Twenty-seven companies provide awards to those individuals who earn state and national com petitions. Twin Valley was represented in Pa. competition by Linda Robmson r -of R 3 Elverson, who submitted a horse proficiency application. A 1980 Twin Valley graduate, she is currently' at tending Williamsport Community College where she is studying floriculture. Linda has had Arabian horses as her PFA project and was also the 1980 winner of the Pennsylvania FFA Pleasure Horse Judging contest. Howard Griest 111 submitted applications in two areas - agricultural mechanics and crop production. He has had field com, small grain, and hay projects as well as dairy and beef cattle. Howard, also a 1980 Twin Valley graduate, has rebuilt and repaired several tractors and pieces of farm equipment as well as done wiring and concrete work. He received second place in the Pa. FFA small gasoline engines contest in 1978. Tom Kirk, also a 1980 Twin Valley graduate, submitted an application in agricultural processing. Tom, of Rl, Honey Brook, is employed in the meat cutting and processing phase of his famiy’s business. Tom has par ticipated m state meat judging competition as well as having been a member of the Pa.
