These parasites are common swine pests that are spread by contact. They are a par ticular problem in the winter when hogs crowd together. Treatment and control also are more difficult in cold weather. Mange mites burrow into the skin, causing itching and in flammation. Hair falls off in patches, most frequently around the tail, the ears and neck, and inside the upper legs. Fowler says hog producers can do a good job of controlling mange mites and lice by following these guidelines: ✓ treat all sows 30 days before farrowing; treat growing-finishing hogs as soon after weaningas possible; times to make reservations necessary because of space limitation, the director of the conservation and environmental protection division, ASCS, may be contacted at P.O. Box 2415, Washington, D.C., 20013, or by phone at 202/447-6221. . treat boars before breeding season; -"V treat all new hogs adding them to the herd; treat the entire herd if an outbreak of mange or lice is detected; and feed hogs a well-balanced ration to keep them healthy. Mange mite and lice control requires a complete break in the parasite’s life cycle. For lice control in adult hogs, apply CO- Ral, Tiguvon, malathion, Rabon, lindane or toxaphene. Mange requires two sprays at 10- to 15-day intervals using lindane, toxaphene or lindane-toxaphene. Dipping vats with a lindane toxaphene mixture are being used for young hogs, says Fowler. Some producers dip four-week-old weaned pigs for mange, then treat them k second time two weeks later. Pigs less than four week old should not be treated.
