C6—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, October 24,1981 UNIVERSITY PARK - How long will it take the egg industry to recoup its losses of the past 2 years? Just when it appears that prices are high enough to return profits, the supply increases or demand decreases and prices go downward. Last year, prices increased sharply m July and August because of reduced output due to high heat and humidity in major egg production areas, according to A. Kermit Birth, Penn State . poultry marketing specialist. This stopped the reduction in number of layers on farms which began in March 1980 and continued into June. In the period September through December, 1980, there were more layers on farms the THERM A • STOP HEAT RECOVERY SYSTEM BY raEC DARI-KOOL vy • With no end in sight for sky- • Make enough FREE HOT rocketing energy cosfs, wise WATER to meet every hot dairy farmers are investing in water need of almost any the very best in energy- milking operation, saving equipment. ' first ot the month than tor the same period a year earlier. Through August 1981 the average number ot layers on farms each month ranged between 0.6 percent below to o.i> above a year earlier. In July there were about 0.6 percent fewer layers in farms than a year earlier. This was due to keeping layers in production tor longer intervals. Through July this year, the hatch of light type chicks for laying-flock replacements is about 12 million less than a year ago. Thus there will be about 8 percent fewer pullets to house as egg-type layers during the remainder ot 1981 in comparison with a year earlier. On August 1 there were about 11 million more force-molted layers on farms than a year _ 7 3- '9 '8 Features; 1 Vertical dual circuit de-superheater plate welded and expanded for internal refriger ant passage 2 1-3/8” refrigerant in lets and outlets 3 Industrial glass lined hot water storage tank 4 IV Foam in-place urethane insulation 5 Dual anode protection against corrosion for extended barrel life 6 Water inlet and high temp outlet are 11/*”I 1 /*” male Npt, 7 150 PSI and 210° F pressure/tempera ture relief valve 8 4500 watt low density electric heating element 9 Adjustable thermo stat (110°Fl70°F) controlled heating element 10 Attractive enameled galvanized external wrapper 11 Medium temperature water out Plus... • Double wall protection between refrigerant and water • Double normal water heating tank insulation earlier In the period June 1980 through July 1981, with the exception ot September 1980, the percent ot the nation’s laying flock being forced molted each month exceeded that ot the same month a year earlier. In the same period, the number ot torce-molted layers on farms ranged from 14.2 to 18.3 percent of the number of hens and pullets of laying age. In August 1981, the percentage was highest ot any month since January, 1972. Export shipments have helped support the market and perhaps have slowed or stopped the downward adjustment in egg production necessary to achieve profitable prices for eggs without export markets. The increase was due largely to" the reduced output per layer in 1980, which is attributed to adverse heat and humidity at that tune. The increased output pen layer is not likely to continue because of a higher proportion of force-molted layers on farms and it has been several months since the majority of these layers finished the molt. Also the number ot layers being forced molted on August 1 was about 1.1 percent less than a year earlier. There is in dication that ffie rate of increase in force molting layers may be decreasing. RD #l, Bangor, Pa. 18013 215-588-1627 Since there are fewer pullets available to replace layers this year, one of the'keys to necessary supply adjustments is how many layers will be force molted. There are those in the industry that hope feed prices-will come down and thereby reduce, cost of production sufficiently to maintain profitable prices. There are many Un certainties in estimating feed prices for this year’s crop. Early frosts, delayed harvest, and export demand all have an impact on prices and surplus available for the poultry industry. Prices will likely be lower than during the past year, by how much is still un certain.
