Use harvest bounty
to beautify home
LANCASTER - Why whit for
the holidays to brighten your home
with autumn’s bounty?
Vegetables, fruits, and flowers are
plentiful now, and there are many
decorative waysto display them.
Create a floral tablescape using
bud vases or discarded pill bottles,
letting each container hold a single
bloom. If you don’t have pill bot
tles, you can use apples. Core the
apple and insert a single flower
with a bit of green. For a smaller
hole, pierce the fruit with a knit
ting needle.
Arrange apples in a bowl or fruit
basket for all family members to
enjoy. Wash the fruit under warm
running water, then dry and polish
by rubbing the skins gently. Place
bowls in various places throughout
the house.
Apples also make great can
dleholders. Hollow out apples to
hold different size candles. Place a
votive candle in a large hole, or a
taper m a smaller one. Make sure
apples set securely, first.
Baskets make excellent con
tamers for fall centerpieces. Try
an arrangement of peppers,
chyrsanthemums and nuts;

Decorating idea:
broccoli, cauliflower and peppers;
or gourds and leaves in mushroom
baskets.
Winter squash combines well
with fall leaves and nuts in a small
basket. Or, fill a small market
basket with rolls of various kinds,
tucking in wheat and nuts. Add a
bow of country fabric.
Butternut, acorn squashes and
cabbage make interesting vases.
Cut the top off a squash and hollow
out the inside. Add water and
arrange flowers. You could also
cut off the top and hollow out the
inside of a cabbage for an
arrangement, but insert a glass to
hold water.
You could really capture the
spirit of fall by placing a small
pumpkin on a platter and
surrounding it with ears of Indian
corn, gourds and nuts.
Remember, autumn decorations
should be simple enough for your
own and your family’s enjoyment.
Arrangements should look casual,
with no fussing about what flower
goes here and what piece of fruit
goes there. And by all means, be
prepared to replace a few disap
pearing apples.
