A2B—Lancaster Fanning, Saturday, October 24,1981
BY DICK ANGLESTEIN
NEW HOLLAND - Eastern
Lancaster County students swept
the second annual County FFA
Market Lamb Roundup and Sale
this week, capturing both the top
placings in the sale category and
the pens selected to move on to
competition at the Farm Show.
Margaret Herr, daughter of Dr.
and Mrs. Robert D. Herr, R 2
Narvon, showed the champions in
both the sale and pen competitions.
Randi Hurst, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Mervin Hurst, Bowmansville, had
the reserve champion among the
23 sale wethers and ewes.
The second and third-place pens,
which will also move on to
Harrisburg in January, were
shown by Barb Herr, Margaret’s
older sister; and Carolyn Witmer,
daug’ ter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl
Witmer, R 1 East Earl.
The three top pens selected in
this one county roundup now form
almost one-fourth of the FFA pens
which will be competing at the
Farm Show.
This year’s statewide quota for
FFA pens of lambs competition
totals exactly 13. Lancaster
County’s allocation was three pens
- just about one-fourth of the
statewide total.
In comparison, 4-H pen com
petition at the Farm Show totals 42
In the sale ring is Carolyn Witmer, R 1 East
Earl, who had the third, fourth and fifth
placings at Lancaster FFA Market Lamb Sale.
Auctioneer and ringman appeal for another
bid.

E. Lancaster Co. sweeps FFA lamb roundup
pens - more than three times the
quota set for FFA’ers.
Some spectators at the Lan
caster County Roundup and Sale
observed that due to the wide
disparity in the FFA and 4-H
quotas for the pen competition a
number of youths with good pens
will be prevented from competing
at the Farm Show. For example, a
total of eight pens competed in the
county roundup - all of which were
considered to be of good to ex
cellent quality.
Margaret Herr’s sale lamb
grand champion, a crossbred
wether which came off Greystone
Manor Farms, near Leola, sold for
$1.21 a pound at Thursday’s sale at
the New Holland Sales Stables. The
roundup was held Wednesday.
Buyer of the grand champion,
which tipped the scales at 125
pounds, was Elmo Manieri, of
Bechtelsville.
Randi Hurst’s reserve grand
champion, a Corriedale breeding
ewe, sold for 98 cents a pound to
Mrs. Joann Saddler, breeder from
Stevens. The ewe weighted 95
pounds.
including five ewes. Average
price, including the champion and
reserve, was 71.65 cents a pound.
