following statement proclaiming
October as Pennsylvania
Livestock Month.
•‘Pennsylvania’s livestock in
dustry is a positive example of how
Pennsylvania agriculture is
growing better. Each year, Penn
sylvania fanners produce top
quality cattle, hogs and sheep
valued at more than $1.6 billion.

meats and meat products and,
through- their expertise, help
improve the standard and quality
of living for our 11.7 million
citizens.

nutritious protein, as well as
essential vitamins and minerals.
The industry faces a real challenge
in attempting to meet the red
meats needs of the Commonwealth

a total of 1.7 billion pounds
and presently provides 25% of the
red meat consumed by our
citizens. By-products of livestock
are also essential in our daily lives,
and range from lanolin, medicine,
wool clothing and cosmetics to the
life saving porcine valve for heart
patients.

serve the consumer in better ways.
Through performance testing
programs and exhibitions, along
with marketing and promotional

4-H program in Lancaster County
welcomed three black Labrador,
puppies, Wednesday, now making
the total of leader puppies, seven.
Four puppies hdd‘ arrived in the
county in the early summer. These
puppies are now six months old.
The new puppies went to:
Julianne Horchler, a, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Horchler of 348
W. Orange St.; Steven Yacono, 14,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Tony Yacono
of 511 Crestview Ave., New
Holland; and Lashunda Clark, 10,
daughter ot Mr. and Mrs! Charles
Clark of 837 Centerville Road.
in all, eight puppies arrived
from Michigan with eight going to
Mifflin County.

the livestock industry of this

The Leader Dog. 4-H program is
a county project administered
through the Mountville 4-H Club.
According to those in charge of the
puppies, the project has a three
fold dimension. The program
serves as an educational ex
perience for each child and as a
family project. The overall goal ot
the program is to provide a blind
person with a leader dog.
The puppies stay with the 4-H’ers
for one year. In the past few
months, they have received many
requests to take the puppies to
service clubs for presentations.
The big supporter ot the
program in Lancaster County is
the PA Lions Club - 2nd leaders in
the nation m helpmg the blind.
