Terms by: JACOB Z. STOLTZFUS Auctioneers: Steve Petersheim 215-593-2442 Everett Kreider Lancaster Farming, Saturday, October 17,1981-033 Early small game season opens today PUBLIC AUCTION SATURDAY, OCTOBER 31 Lunch on Premises surge of activity with the opening of the early small game season today. Squirrel and grouse will be the species that can be hunted; seasons on most of the other species of small game open two weeks from today. Squirrels are con sidered by wildlife managers to be the most underharvested small game species in Penn sylvania. Last year, hunters took over 2.5 million bushytails in the Keystone State, the highest figure in more than ten years. Grouse harvests, which had been in the vicinity of a quarter million birds annually for quite a few years, have been moving upward recently, and in 1980 exceeded half a million. A recent survey Of the state’s district game protectors showed that there should be fairly good populations of both grouse and squirrels this year, with local exceptions, of course. The survey showed that district game protectors reported they had excellent squirrel populations in eight countries and good supplies in 36 counties, fairly evenly distributed across the state. Judging from field reports, the best squirrel hunting this year should be in eastem.counties. District game protectors in twelve counties reported that grouse populations are at excellent levels, while another 36 game protectors rated their numbers of the state ' game bird as being good. The best grouse hunting this year should' be in the western part of the state. Game ’ Commission studies show that nearly 700,000 hunters turn out for squirrels, while the number of grouse hunters in the state is estimated to be more than half a million. Six squirrels are permitted to be taken daily by hunters, who may have twelve bushytails in possession after the opening day of the season. Hunters may take two grouse per day, with a possession limit of four after the first day of the season. The initial season for squirrel and grouse will end on Saturday, November 28. An ex tended or winter season for squirrel and grouse will open on Saturday, December 26, and close on Saturday, January 9. Along with the early season squirrel and grouse hunting, shooters often have a chance at woodcock and common or Wilson’s snipe. The season on these migratory game birds runs from October 17 through December 19. The daily limit on snipe is eight, with a possession limit of sixteen. Five woodcock may be taken daily, with no more than ten in possession.
