ABOUT GATHERING WOOD
Remember the cold months ot
winter? In a few months they will
be here again. If you are adding
wood to your heating energy for
the coming winter, it’s tune to
start thinking about it. You can, ot
course, buy wood and have it
delivered ready to use. But if you
look around, you can find other
sources too.
"Elm trees killed by Dutch Elm
disease make good firewood,” says
Walter Johnson, Extension torest
resource specialist at The Penn
sylvania State University. But
remember to use them the first
winter or before the spring
following the tree’s death. This
prevents the disease-carrying
beetles from emerging and in
fecting healthy trees.
You may also be able to get
firewood from dumps and landfills,
but be sure you have the approval
of the landfill authority. As much
as 30 percent of the debris in some
town and city landfills consists of

and edmg in their millyards.

these materials as firewood at
minimal cost.
Another source of firewood may
be the power companies. They
otter the logs, limbs and tree tops
that result trom their maintenance
eftorts. Firewood may also be
available trom the National forests
but check with your nearest
Forest Service District Ranger tor
more information. State foresters,
county extension agents, and
county and city foresters are all
sources ol mtormation on local
firewood.

Rohrers take sheep
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Gerald &
Barbara Rohrer ot Quarryville,
PA will be exhibitors at the 1981
North American International
Livestock Exposition, according to
Harold Workman, Manager of the
Expo. Workman said the Rohrers’
have entered nine head of sheep tor
competition at the North American
International, an event which will
take place during November 7-21 in
Louisville, Kentucky. The NAILE
will be held at the Kentucky Fair
and Exposition Center.
The North American In
ternational Livestock Exposition is
entering its eighth consecutive
year this season, and those who
compete will vie tor $300,000 in
second bath, it is possible to
remodel an existing bath and
compartmentalize a bath.
