Pa. barrow excels
in nat’l test

& Sons, Port Royal, placed high in
the recent National Barrow Show
Production Tested Barrow Con
test.
Their barrow was pul on lest in
the National Barrow Show
Production Tested Contest at the
National Barrow Show Test Station
in New Ulm, Minn., on May 22. The
test was completed September 4,
and the barrows were evaluated at
Geo. A. Hormel & Company’s
Austin, Minn., plant.
There were 804 barrows which
started the test and 297 or 36
percent of the barrows finished the
test meeting all of the
requirements of average daily
gain and carcass merit. Brum
mer’s Poland China barrow met
the requirements excelling in
average daily gam and carcass
merit. The carcass measurements
on the barrow were: length, 29.6;
fat depth 0.90; lorn eye area 5.10.

YORK According to scientists
at the University of Georgia,
exercise has little effect on
reproductive performance in sows
and gilts.
All females in the study were
tethered during gestation;
however, 1 group was forced to
walk on a treadmill 15 minutes
daily 5 days a week.
No differences were.observed for
birth weight, weaning weight or
gestation length between the two
groups. There was a tendency for
exercised dams to have shorter
farrowmg times, although the
difference was not statistically
significant.
The study indicated that sows
receiving no exercise can give
birth to normal litters and
producer sufficient milk to wean,
large healthy pigs.
