New Holland celebrates 50th with chain

NEW HOLLAND - It was
double delight at the New Holland
Farm Show this week as the show
celebrated its golden anniversary
and a young showman earned
Grand Champion at the Beef Show
the first time he has ever at
tempted such a feat.
That young showman was Er
nest Mast of Morgantown who
simply described himself as "very
surprised” when chosen cham
pion. Ernest’s steer was a
Charolais/Hereford cross,
weighing in at 1215 pounds and
selling to the Leola Family
Restaurant for $3.39 per pound.
Reserve Champion honors, and
the Senior Showman title ot the
beef show went to Janae Martin,
New Holland, a five-year veteran of
both 4-H and FFA. Janae’s steer
was a Simmental/Angus cross
weighing 1170 pounds and selling
for $1.28 per pound to The Bird-In-
Hand Motor Inn and Restaurant.
Sale averages for the steer show
were $.96 per pound without the
champion and $1.06 with the
champion.
Thursday’s list ot excitement
also included the swine show which
recognized such youngsters as
Jimmy Martin, 14, of New Holland
who earned the Grand Champion
title and Laura Folker, 9, of Pork
Chop Farm in New Holland,
Reserve Champion.
' Jimmy’s 267-pound hog sold tor
$3.40 to Hatfield and Laura’s hog,
Smokey, a Chester/Hampsture
cross weighing in at 222 pounds
about three times the weight of its
owner, sold for $3.05, also to
Hatfield.
The new Grand Champion of the
Steer Show is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Paul D. Mast, owners and
operators of a potato and a 100-
head-beet farm. Ernest is a
member of Garden Spot FFA. ,
Fifteen-year-old Janae Martin
hails from New Holland and is the
daughter ot Mr. and Mrs. Bob
Martin.
Janae reports that this year is
her fifth year in FFA and 4-H
making this year "the 17th year my
Little Laura Folker holds a trophy half as big as she is, after
selling her reserve champion hog to Hatfield, represented by
Jerry Clemens.

family has been involved in 4-H. ’ ’
The Martin family’s operation
includes -chickens, 48 head of
Holstems, and 38 steers.
Champion hog owner Jimmy
Martin is the son of Mary Mai t;;.
and is in his seventh year ol 4-H.
Last year was another big year
tor Jimmy in that he was named
Grand Champion also a proud
accomplishment since he reports
only onfe pen of hogs at home.
Laura Folker, Reserve Cham
pion hog shower, is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Tony Folker and is
currently in her third year of 4-H.
Laura also earned Champion
Fitter of the Swine Show.
In addition to the traditional
trophy and ribbon, these four
young showers will receive an 8 x
10 color picture of their champion
animal.*
