Reserve BY SUSAN KAUFFMAN Staff Correspondent QUARRYVILLE - The Solanco Fair FFA steer sale took place last Friday afternoon at the closing day of the fair. Bernie Houghton, Christiana, showed the grand champion steer for the third year in a row. His 1235-pound steer brought a 30 cent increase over last year’s champion. The $2.05 figure totaled $2,531.75. As has been the tradition for the past 27 years, local grocer, Truman Ferguson was on hand to bid in the top bid for the FFA steer at the Solanco Fair. Swayne Disposal of Quarryville was the final contender to bow to Ferguson’s buying bid. A total of 17 steers were sold Friday afternoon. The reserve grand champion shown by Brett Holzhauer, Holtwood, was pur chased by K and S, Inc., R 1 Quarryyille, for $1.37 a pound. Holzhauer’s heavyweight weighed in at 1185 pounds which cost the local equipment firm $1,623.45. The total sale amounted to $17,018.60 for the 17 head bringing the average paid to $l.lO a pound. Tom Herr’s fourth place light weight sold for 90 cents to James G. Kreider and Son. Willie the Butcher, Wilmer Kreider, Washington Boro, paid 87 cents for Jamie Frey’s first place light weight. Bill Coyne’s third place lightweight and Dwight Herr’s third place middleweight, respectively. The remaining ten animals sold for prices in the seventy cent figures. Brian Trimble’s 1080- pound middlweight sold for 78 cents to Kreider Brotners ivxuk Transportation. The check for $842.40 for Trimble’s steer will be given to Teen Challenge, Rehrersburg, it was announced at the close of the sale. Farmers National Bank of Quarryville, Vemoy from Hickory Hill and Agway also bought steers at the sale. At the market hog sale which concluded immediately before the FFA steer sale, Friday,- the champion hog, shown by Vickie Warfel, R 1 Quarryville, brought a record $2.05 from Wilmer Kreider. Her hog weighed 239 pounds, bringing the total to $489.95. Scott Trimble, Peach Bottom, sold his reserve champion hog to Fowl’s Feed Service, Peach Bottom, for $2.35 a pound. Hatfield Packing contended with the local feed dealer for Scott’s 219-pound hog. Lancaster Bone, Quarryville, paid 80 cents a pound for Sandy Kauffman’s 225-pound second place middleweight. The First National Bank of Lancaster County paid 78 cents for Tracy Landis’s reserve champion pen of two which totaled43s pounds. New Holland Sales bought Mark Welk’s 200-pound hog for 76 cents. Hoober Feed of Paradise and paid Welk 73 cents a pound for his pair lightweights which weighed 39D pounds. The remainder of the eighty hogs brought prices in the upper 50’s and 60’s. Agway, New Holland Sales, Fulton Grange #66, Dr. Larry Schmuck, Peach Bottom, Walter Dunlap, Lancaster Stockyards and Vintage Sales Stables, also bought hogs at the sale. Thomas B, King, Penn State associate dean for extension, points out that Parsons is coor dinating Extension swine programs in Pennsylvania. • A native of Hadley, Massachusetts, Parsons received three degrees from Michigan State University; a bachelor of science m animal husbandry in 197 B; master of science in swine nutrition in 1979; and doctor of philosophy in swine' nutrition and management in 1981. Prior to being named to the ‘College of Agriculture faculty, he was an assistant Extension swine specialist, a research assistant, and animal caretaker, all at Michigan State University.
