PA student receives
UDIA scholarship
ROSEMONT, 111. - Judith Anne
Harding, a freshman at Penn
sylvania State University, has
been named the 1981 winner of the
$l,OOO United Dairy Industry
Association Employee Scholar
ship. Runners-up who receive $5OO
awards are Sara Ann Barlass, a
student at the University of
Wisconsin-Madison, and Eric
Knutson, who attends Virginia
Polytechnic Institute and State
University.
The three winners were selected
from a record 49 high school
seniors who applied for the
scholarships. The annual awards,
presented to students entering
college to pursue a degree in
marketing dairy products, are
funded by voluntary contributions
from employees of UDIA and its
family of organizations, which
includes American Dairy
Association, Dairy Research Inc.
and National Dairy Council.
UDIA is the national
promotional organization for U.S.-
produced milk and milk products,
funded by dairy producers,
processors/handlers and equip
ment/supply manufacturers.
Besides UDIA employees, UDIA
member organization managers
and ADA’s advertising agency,
D’Arcy-MacManus and Masius,
joined in the 1981 effort.
The scholarship was presented
for the sixth year at the Dairy
Shrine Club annual awards
banquet at the World Dairy Expo
on October 1. This is the first time
that three awards have been
presented; only one $l,OOO award
has been given in the past. The
scholarship is administered by the
Dairy Shrine Club, with winners
selected by an anonymous com
mittee appointed by Dairy Shrine
representatives.
Judith Harding, Brookfield,
Pennsylvania, this year’s $l,OOO
award winner, graduated second
in her high school class, is a
member of the National Honor
Society and immediate past
president of her high school’s
student council. She also has
served as secretary-treasurer of
the Pennsylvania Junior Guernsey
Breeders’ Association and was a
member of her county 4-H dairy
cattle judging team.
Harding’s long-range plan is to
join her two older brothers in
managing the family’s 150-head
Guernsey farm and retail dairy
store following graduation from
Penn State. She is studying
agricultural business
management, dairy production
and marketing.
Sara Ann Barlass, Janesville,
Wisconsin, also a member of the
National Honor Society, was
president of her high school’s
senior class. Active in sports and
other extra-curricular activities,
she found time for an outstanding
4-H career with registered Jersey
cattle. She is majoring in both
agricultural journalism and dairy
science in her first year at the
University of Wisconsin and will
pursue a career “explaining the
facts and figures of milk
marketing to consumers and
dairymen alike.”
Eric Knutsen, Rising Sun,
Maryland, another member of the
National Honor Society, graduated
sixth in his class. r
