Association chairman Don Meike
said last Thursday he was
“’delighted” the government of
New Zealand has signed an
agreement to end many of the
subsidies it has provided its
producers who export lamb meat
to the United States.
“This is a great victory for the
American sheep industry,” Meike
said. “We believe in free trade
with foreign nations, but it has to
be fair trade. And it is not fair
when New Zealand lamb is sub
sidized by 15 to 20 percent. ’ ’
New Zealand’s action comes as a
result of a petition filed in April by
NWGA asking the Department of
Commerce to assess a duty on
unported New Zealand lamb to
offset the improper subsidies.
Meike cautioned, however, that
continued NWGA action may be
necessary because, under the
agreement, the subsidies will not
be entirely phased out until 1985,
and the agreement does not ad
dress some less significant sub
sidies cited in NWGA’s April

“If there are ways we can fur
ther aid our industry, we will
pursue them,” Meike said. “The
New Zealand government has
eliminated probably 75 percent of
our concern on the subsidies issue.
But we would not be serving our
industry if we didn’t shoot for 100
percent.”
Meike indicated that once the
subsidy issue was completely
resolved that the NWGA would
step up its efforts to seek
Congressional approval of
quantitative limits on unported
lamb meat. Legislation to ac
complish this has been introduced
in both the House and the Senate.-
