Adams 4-H’ers vie for dairy

ARENDTSVILLE - Twenty-six
Adams County 4-H’ers spent a
busy week at the recent South
Mountain Fair, grooming, clipping
and showing their •prize’ dairy
cattle for championship honors.
Altogether, forty-five head of
Holstems and colored breeds were
shown.
In the Holstein competition,
Kathy Durboraw, Gettysburg,
exhibited her aged cow, Gracistate
Elevation 'farus to Senior and
Grand Champion honors. This
winner has a lifetime record ot
62,146 pounds milk and 3,026 fat.
She is out of Gracistate ABC
Tams, sired by Round Oak Rag
Apple Elevation.
Kathy’s cow is no stranger to the
winner’s circle and has a long line
up of purple ribbons to prove it.
The cow was Open Grand
Champion at the South Mountain
Fair in 1977, was Junior All Penn
sylvania 3 year old and Junior All
Pennsylvania Honorable Mention
as an aged cow, the 4-H Grand
Champion at the South Mountain
Fair in 1978, and the 4-H Reserve
Champion tor the last two years.
This year’s Reserve Senior and
Reserve Grand Champion went to
the four-year-old Holstein shown
by Jennie Hess, Gettysburg,
Jennie Weimer of New Oxford took
the Junior Championship with her
senior yearling and the Reserve
Junior spot with her senior calf.
In the Guernsey breed, two
sisters, Peggie and Suzie Murren
of Hanover divided that breed’s top
awards. Suzie took Senior and
Grand Champion honors with her
3-year-old, Mt. Murren Flashes
Paula, and Reserve Senior and
Reserve Grand Champion with Mt.
Murren Bonus Babe. Paula’s
projected lactation is 10,800 pounds
milk with 470 fat. She is a daughter
of Welcome Flash Holhrex out ot
Pmey Lane Dairy Most Pepper.
Older sister Peggy won the
Junior Championship with Mr.
Murren Dmo’s Josie, a senior call
sired by Mt. Murren Fabulous
Dmo out ot Mt. Murren Bonus
Jackie.
In the Brown Swiss breed, again
two sisters, Karen and Carol
tiobaugh, divided the cham
pionships. The senior and grand
champ was Karen’s Stilesnte
Samson Sweet Sandy. A two-year
old, Sandy is out of Stilesnte
