1235-pound Simmental crossbreed

QUARRYVILLE - Emanating
all the confidence and looks in
his ten-gallon hat and his bola tie
of a cattle baron fresh out of Texas,
Judge Henry Gruber of A & B
Packing, Allentown, tapped the
1235-pound steer of Berme
Houghton to proclaim him
champion of the Solanco Baby Beet
Show, yesterday.
The son of Ronald and Betsy
Houghton, Berme is an 18-year-old
FFA’er from Christiana. His steer
was a Simmental crossbreed, also
placing Champion in the FFA
show.
Brett Holzhauer, Kirkwood,
showed the Reserve Champion in
both the FFA show and overall.
Brett, 17, is the son of Robert and
Eleanor Holzhauer. His steer was
an Angus-Simmental crossbreed
weighing in at 1185 pounds.
Champion 4-H titles went to
Joane Ferguson, daughter of Mrs.
Joan Ferguson, Kirkwood. Joane’s
steer, 1030 pounds, was a Chianma-
Angus crossbreed.
Ernie Frey emerged from the
ring a double winner also. He was
named Reserve Champion winner
in the 4-H show and Reserve Senior
Solanco sheep
