License
hunting
dogs
HARRISBURG -
With small game
hunting season ap
proaching, Penn
sylvania Agriculture
Secretary Penrose
Hallowell urges sport
smen to make sure their
dogs are licensed before
going into the field.
He said, “Even
though dogs over six
months of age are
required to be licensed
by January 15 each
year, many sportsmen
mistakenly wait until
the hunting season
begins to register their
animals.
“A licese is an
inexpensive way to
protect a dog in the
field,” Hallowell added,
noting that the
Department’s Bureau of
Dog Law Enforcement
receives hundreds of
calls each year from
hunters whos dogs
strayed while in the
field.
"If a stray dog is
licensed,” he said, "we
have a means to trace it
back to the owner.
Without it, the dog may
never be returned.”
License fees are only
$1.20 for males and
spayed females and
$2.20 for unspayed
female dogs.
The Secretary noted
hunters who find a stray
dog in the field should
check for a license tag
and when get in touch
with the County
Treasurer’s Office as
soon as possible. "A
well trained hunting dog
represents a lot of hard
work and care, as well
as being ‘almost family’
to the hunter," he said..
Hallowell added
hunters should be
careful to avoid
wounding or killing a
dog which is pursuing a
game animal. “They
may be liable for
damages unless it can
be proven the dog was
endangering the life of a
deer or other big game
animal.” Hunters who
destroy a dog must
report it to a game
protector or the owner
within five days.
‘‘A basic un
derstanding of a dog
owner’s responsibilities
can go a long way
toward avoiding many
problems during hun
ting season,” HalloweU
said.
