Takes grand honors at SJE. 4-H District Dairy Slum Seidel Holstein entry gives repeat performance DlO—Lancaster Fanning, Saturday, September 12,1981 By Ann Miller ALLENTOWN For the second consecutive year, Berks County’s Helen Seidel exhibited her Holstein entry, Adairland Sue-Ellen to grand championship honors during the 36th Annual Southeast District Dairy Show, held here at the fairgrounds last Tuesday. On her way to being selected best Holstein by judge Paul King, a Holstein breeder from Delta, York County, Sue-Ellen defeated 111 other top breed entries. Before taking the top spot in the southeast 4-H competition, Sue-Ellen was tagged grand champion at the Berks County Round-up, held recently during the Kutztown Fair. After 11 years of 4-H competition, this is Helen’s final year. Reserve champion honors in the Holstein show went to Donald Stoltzfus of Morgantown, Chester County with Penwood Jerry Desire. Stoltzfus is in his ninth year of 4-H competition. The colored breeds, which numbered slightly less than 100 head, were judged by Neil Bowen, a Holstein breeder from Wellsboro, Tioga County. Steven Mack, Northampton County, exhibited the grand champion Ayrshire, a junior 2- year-old called Raymack Joanne. Lois Mark of Chester County admits she was surprised when her junior yearling, Tri-Linden Jack’s Kathy not only was tagged Junior Champion but went on to take the Reserve Grand Champion honors. Lois, who has been showing in 4-H dairy contests for nine years, hails from West Grove. Her parents have been dairying since 1949 with a mixed herd of grade and registered Holsteins, registered Ayrshires and Brown Swiss. D N Delegate Dainty, a 4-year old owned by Kethleen Kopsticki from Montgomery County, wore the purple rosette in the Brown Swiss show. Lehigh County’s Bryan R. Urmy showed his aged cow. Buzzing Patter (twin) to the reserve grand championship in the Brown Swiss competition. Foxie Springs Falcon Lady, a 3- year-old shown by Jon A. Zollers of Berks County, took the grand championship in the Guernsey show. Another Zoller entry, 4-year old Lindenholf Don Midas Reta, was selected reserve grand champ Guernsey. In the Jersey show, Elizabeth Wollaston’s 4-year-old cow was selected as grand champion over 42 other entries. As her name implies, Topcat Maple Lawn Nellie, is not unfamiliar with the winner's circle, having been selected grand champion of the Chester County 4-H Round-Up. Elizabeth will be starting her freshman year at Delaware Valley College, majoring in dairy husbandry. Judge Bowen went with the second place 4-year-old for his reserve grand champion Jersey. Golden Royal Snowflake of MVF is owned by Bruce Rhein, Schuylkill County. Bruce has been showing in 4-H dairy shows for 10 years. His parents, who have been dairying since 1950, own a registered herd of 75 Jerseys. During the course of the show, exhibitors who did an outstanding job of fitting and showing their animals were given Master Fitter and/or Master Showman awards. There were a total of 61 Master Fitters and 61 Master Showmen. The blue ribbon animals in each class are eligible to compete in the Pennsylvania Junior Dairy Show to be held Monday, September 21 at the Farm Show Complex, Harrisburg.
