“Cropland fields are managed
by people, not by nature, and must
be prepared for winter,” says
Mercedes Seman, soil con
servationist of the U.S. Soil Con
servation Service.
There are several steps that rar
be taken to “winterize”
agriculture’s most valuabl
resource, the soil, she notes,
particularly effective measure js
keeping crop resides on the fields
over the winter months.
Crop residues, whether living or
dead, buffet the force of rain drops,
reduce wind velocity near the soil
surface, moderate temperatures
at the soil surface and help to
reduce runoff and erosion losses.
