SHIPPENSBURG - South
Central Area 4-H Horse Production
Show, held last Thursday at the
Shippensburg Fair Grounds,
brought together 120 outstanding
horses and 4-H horsemen from 12
surrounding counties: Adams,
Bedford, Cumberland, Dauphin,
Franklin, Huntingdon, Lancaster,
Lebanon, Perry, Somerset, York
and Cambria.
James Gallagher, master
showmanship judge, selected only
two master showmen during the
entire show. Alida Farrington,
Lancaster, was honored as a
master showmen with her yearling
Appaloosa, Princess Candicane.
Lisa Helder, York, was
presented a master showmen
award as she showed her stock
horse, Ms. Brigher Bar.
Type judge, Robert Church had
quite a job ahead of him with 39
classes in the type show.
Tammy and Linda Burruss,
sisters from Cumberland County,
competed in the same Paint and
Pinto classes and were ecstatic
with the results. Tammy went
home with two blue ribbons—one
blue was awarded to her Paint and
Pinto colt and the other ribbon
went to herbrood mare, Shipper’s
Snap. Linda followed closely witha
second place awarded for her
Paint and Pinto colt and third
place honors for Skipa Showgirl,
her broodmare.
In the two riding classes, Alida
Farrington rode into the Western
Pleasure winner’s circle on M.S.

earn Master Showman honors
Iron Eyes Cody, while Margot
Leßoy, Lebanon, was Judge
Robert Church’s choice for the
blue ribbon in the Eastern
Pleasure class.
Forty-nine 4-H’ers and their
horses received blue ribbons in the
South Central competition and will
advance to the district competition
in Harrisburg.

Ladies lead winners capture attention at Md. state fair
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The
Maryland Sheep Breeders
Association again sponsored two
competitive events for 4-H and
FFA members on Sunday, August
30, at the Maryland State Fair in
Timonium prior to the traditional
market lamb and breed shows on
Monday and Tuesday.
There were six contestants in the
annual washed lamb fitting and
showing contest and 16 par
ticipants in the fourth annual
ladies lead competition.
In the washed lamb event,
Jennifer Hagerty of Clarksburg,
Montgomery County was named
Junior Champion.
John Bouma of Clarksville,
Howard County, won in the senior
division, and Hughy F. Salfner,
Adams

narrated the ladies lead contest for
4-H and FFA members.
Both of the top two contestants in
the ladies lead event hail from
Carroll County. Becky Sue Lynch,
IS, of Lmwood placed first, and
Marian G- Cummings, 16, of
Westminster was second. Third
place went to Virginia L. Weaver,
10, of Perryvilie, Cecil County.

jacket and blue gray plaid shut
with matching vest for Becky-and
a matching bow for Joy, her
yearling Hampshire ewe. Becky

with little lamb buttons. She led a
Suffolk ewe named Arielle.

Virginia also won honors on the
same day in the 4-H rabbit show at
the Maryland State Fair.
Sheep showmen this year at the
100th Maryland State. Fair were'
enthusiastic about the new sheep
judging arena and enclosed
washing facilities for their
animals. The new ‘washing
facilities eliminated an outside
mud problem which had plagued
the state fair sheep bam area for
' years.
