Williams shows hog to top of Lehigh Round-up

Susan Williams, 14, exhibited the grai , champion mark
hog during the Lehigh County 4-H Swine Round-Up held la:
Wednesday. Hatfield purchased the Duroc x
crossbred for $4.70 a pound.
QUAKERTOWN - Last Wed
nesday was a grand day for 14-
year-old Susan Williams of New
Tripoli whose 235-pound Duroc x
Spotted market hog was chosen
grand champion of the Lehigh
County 4-H Market Swine Round-
Up.
Judging the 104 animals, en
thusiastically exhibited by 27
Lehigh 4-H’ers, was Kenneth
Ketterer, Newville.
Susan’s champ was named tirst
place light-heavyweight hog and
the heavyweight champion before
going on to the show’s top honors.
This was quite an achievement for
the first-year 4-H’er who also was
selected reserve champion
showman in her division. Susan’s
champion sold to Hatfield Packing
Company for $4.70 a pound.
For reserve grand champion.
Judge Ketterer selected the first
place medium-middleweight hog
and mediumweight champion.
This 220-pound Hampshire was
shown by 13-year-old Seth Gruber,
also of New Tripoli. It sold to
George’s Foodlmer, Bethlehem,
for $2.30 a pound.
In the lightweight classes, Mark
Lazarus, 9, from Germansville,
had the first place heavy
hghtweight and was selected as the
division champion. His Duroc x
Spotted hog, weighing 19& pounds,
brought $1 a pound from A & £
Packing, Allentown, for Medford
Packing Co., Chester.
The reserve champion light
weight was the first place medium
hgbtweight animal exhibited by
Seth Gruber. This 190-pound
Yorkshire gilt also sold to Medford
for $1 a pound.
Scott Lazarus, 10, of Ger
mansville, showed his 230-pound
Duroc barrow to the reserve
championship of the middleweight
division. This champ went to
George’s Foodlmer after bringing
a 90-cents-a-pound bid.
The reserve heavyweight
champion was shown by 9-year-old
Amanda Gruber, New Tripoli. The
245-pound Yorkshire gilt was
purchased by Leidy, Inc.,
Souderton, for $l a pound.
The 104 head averaged 83.5 cents"
a pound. Auctioneering the sale,
which was held at the Quakertown
Livestock Market, was Jim Mohr.

Lazarus accepted the reserve
champion fitter’s ribbon.
Scott Lazarus swept the
championship honors m the junior
division tor 4-H’ers between the
ages of <i and 11, while Amanda and
Ben Gruber shared the reserve
champion awards for fitting and
showmanship, respectively.
In the intermediate division,
Todd Bennecoff was selected
champion fitter and showman, and
Bonnie Wessner claimed both
reserve champion awards.
And in the competition between
the 4-H’ers in the Over-15 category,
Leslie Lazarus took the champion
titter and reserve champion
showman honors. Willi Wilson was
named champion showman and
Dave Brannan was the reserve
champion fitter.
