Cattle cycle up in Pa.
HARRISBURG Pennsylvania
farmers had 2,100,000 cattle and
calves on hand July 1, according to
the Pennsylvania Crop Reporting
Service. This is a nine percent
increase from the July, 1980 level
of 1,920,000 head, and sets a new
record for cattle and calves on
hand in the state.
The keystone state’s calf crop for
1981 is estimated at 890,000 up nine
percent from 1980. The 960,000
cows that have calved total seven
percent more than a year ago. Milk
cow numbers at 706,000 were
virtually unchanged from July,
1980.
Milk cow replacement heifers
500 pounds and over at 306,000 were
up six percent. Beef cows, at
254.000, were 32 percent above a
year earlier. Beef cow
replacement heifers at 47,000 head,
were up 12 percent.
Other heifers, 500 pounds and
over at 45,000, were up two per
cent. Steers and bulls in this same
weight category numbered 240,000
and 45,000, up 33 and seven percent
-espectively, from last year. All
calves under 500 pounds numbered
157.000, eight percent above July 1,
1980.

All cows and heifers that have
calved, at 51.1 million head, are up
wo percent from a year ago and
seven percent above July 1,1979.
Beef cows, at 40.2 million head,
are up two percent from last year,
and milk cows at 10.9 million head
are up one percent from 1980.
Other class inventories on July 1
and their changes from last year
are as follows: all heifers 500
pounds and over, 18.4 million, up
three percent; milk replacement
heifers, 4.64 million, up six per
cent; beef replacement heifers,
6.24 million, up seven percent;
other heifers, 7.51 million, down
one percent; steers 500 pounds and
over, 16.3 million, down two per
cent; bulls 500 pounds and over,
2.64 million, up one percent; and
heifer, steer and bull calves under
500 pounds. 36.6 million, up two
percent.
The 1981 calf crop, at 45.6 million
head, is one percent above the 45.4
million bom in 1980.
