Intemat’l food standards seminar set for Sept.
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S.
Department of Agriculture and the
Food and Drug Administration will
host a seminar on Codex Com
mission activities here on Sep
tember 15 and 16.
The Codex commission works to
develop international food stan
dards that will promote world-wide
food safety and international trade
in food products, according to
Eddie Kimbrell, associate deputy
administrator of USDA’s
Agricultural Marketing Service.
Kimbrell said invited speakers
include Secretary of Agriculture
John Block, and Assistant
Secretary of Agriculture C.W.
McMillan. Two majorspeakersare
expected from the Department of
Health and Human Services’ Food
and Drug Administration; Com
missioner Arthur Hull Hayes and
Sanford Miller, Director of FDA’s
Bureau of Foods.
Also expected to attend are
Graham Kermode, chief of the
Joint FAO/WHO Food Standards
Programme, and Don Kimmel of
the Food and Agriculture
Organization.

Deputy Agriculture Secretary
Richard Lyng will be the featured
speaker at a dinner Sept. 15 at the
Marriott Twin Bridges Hotel. The
dinner will begin at 7:30 p.m.,
preceded by a 6 p.m. reception.
The Codex Commission was
established in 1963 by the Food and
Agriculture Organization of the
United Nations and the World
Health Organization.
According to Kimbrell, the
purpose of the meeting is to assess
the past and future role of the U.S.
in the commission and to give the
public the opportunity to learn
about the commission. The
meeting will also allow par
ticipants to assess the U.S. position
in each of the 19 active Codex
committees and to chart U.S.
progress in accepting standards
that have already been developed.
The seminar is free and open to
the general public. It will be
conducted in the Jefferson
Auditorium at USDA’s South
Building, 14th and Independence
Ave., S.W. Washington, D.C.
Registration is from 8 to 9:30 a.m.
on September 15 and the program
begins at 9:30 a.m. On the second
day, September 10, the program
will begin at 8:30 a.m.
