Generally we had pleasant
weather for the 15 days that 1 spent
in Europe. However, after taking
pictures of the lion carved into a
natural stone wall in Lucerne and
leaving our rain gear on the bus, a
sudden rain storm came up.
We were all on our own for two
hours and as 1 came out of a
Catholic Cathedral I walked into
rain. So I gingerly picked my way
along large buildings for several
blocks back to the shopping sec
tion. Many of our group were
huddled under awnings but I didn’t
intend to spend my morning that
way. Therefore, I bought a two
dollar blue plastic umbrella and
went merrily on my way. I found a
beautiful flower-embroidered
white blouse and a special red,
white and blue paperweight in a
jewelry store. Also managed to get
a travelers check cashed so that 1
could buy a necktie for my
husband.
Our lunch in the Stadtkeller
Bestir :ant was a fun experience.
After the cheese fondue, white
sausage and fried potato meal, we
were entertained with yodeling,
long Alpine horns and polkas.

Then on our way to the big cable
car that would carry us to Mt. Rigi,
we stopped to see a church built
with Italian stone. It bad no win
dows but light filtered through the
stone and gave a soft glow inside
the building.
It was quite foggy and so the ride
up the mountain was not as
thrilling as it otherwise would have
been. The last leg of the trip was in
a cog railroad built in 1871,
followed by a short steep hike to
the peak. After a half-hour, the
clouds cleared and we could see
snow covered mountains nearby. It
was 43 degrees and some farm
buildings up there yere built in
1604. Brown Swiss cows were
pasturing at 6000 ft.
We got our bus at Vitznau and
traveled to a ferry where we
crossed 500 feet deep Lake
Lucerne.
Our hotel was at Interlaken
where a swift river ran through the
town. All the towns had small
bakeries to tempt us inside to
spend our francs. Pies were $B.OO
each. Unwrapped bread was left at
hotels in big open trays.
