MDA receives permit for Mesurol as repellent on grapes
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - David
Shriver, chief of the Maryland
Department of Agriculture’s
Pesticide Applicators Law Section,
has announced EPA has granted
Maryland an emergency exemp
tion for use of “Mesurol” 75%WP
on grapes to repel birds.
He points out that, under terms
of the EPA permit, a maximum of
three applications may be made
per acre and that a one-day
preharvest interval must be ob
served. The special exemption will
expire on November 30, 1981, and
therefore, is good only for the 1981
Maryland grape growing season.
The emergency use exemption
from labeling comes under
provisions of Section 18 of FIFRA,
the Federal Insecticide,
Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act,
which is the law governing the use
of pesticides in the nation.

special exemption, as filed by
MDA in cooperation with the
Maryland Cooperative Extension
Service, some 350 acres of grapes
in Maryland this year may need
such treatment.
Grape culture, both for wine
making and for table grape sales,
is an expanding business in
Maryland. Birds have proven to be
a major threat to the carefully
nurtured and expensive crop.
“Mesurol” currently is used as a
bird repellent in other states for
such crops as cherries, blueberries
and grapes. In the past it has been
used to repel birds on blueberry
and grape crops in Maryland.
The material is not designed to
kill birds or injure them. Its effect
is to make the grapes unattractive
to birds from a taste standpoint.
