Enforcer twins calved at Spring Bottom Farm

FAIRFIELD - When a Polled
Hereford breeder arranges to have
his champion cow bred by one of
the top bulls m the nation, he
spends the next nine months
hoping and praying for a strong
head thy calf. But, in the case of
Frank and Becky Darcey, Jr.’s top
cow, VH Westy Hilger 07, the
match with national champion
Enforcer 107 H produced twice
what they bargained for twin
bull calves.
“I didn’t know she was carrying
twins,” remarked Frank, who has
been premier exhibitor at the
Pennsylvania Farm Show for the
past two years. “She went and had
them unassisted at 2 a.m. one
weighed 65 pounds and the other
was about 75 pounds. The normal
weight of a single calf is between 65
and 100 pounds.”
While the twins’ weights may

was six months old in September of
1978 when she was purchased in
Montana and brought East. She
went to the 1979 Pennsylvania
Farm Show and was selected
reserve grand champion. She
returned the next year as a cow
and won the grand champion
banner.
This remarkable female’s other
wins include grand champion at
the Keystone International
Livestock Exposition, reserve
grand champion at the Eastern
National Livestock Exposition;
reserve grand champion _at
Maryland State Fair; grand
champion at York Fair; reserve
junior champion at Virginia State
Fair; grand champion at the
Delaware State Fair and grand
champion at the Cumberland
County Fair.
Speakers to highlight sheep workshop
sheepmen also with programs on
economics, profits and increasing
reproductive efficiency.
The, novice sheepmen will get
hands-on experience with some
basic management techniques
during the morning session.
Techniques such as foot trimming,
castration, docking, and vac
cinations will be demonstrated by
Emory Leffel, Professor of Animal
Science, University of Maryland
and Rick Lund, professional
shepherd from Great Britain.
The vast opportunities available
in the sheep industry will be

Rancher, had a weaning weight of
640 pounds, giving Westy an inherd
ratio of 117, or about 17 points
above normal. Rancher was sold to
Larry Henry of Jolly Jill Farms,
Hanover.
The twins’ sire was the breed’s
first million dollar bull and is a
certified “Gold Standard Sire”,
which means his offspring have
done well at shows and have
passed performance tests at
evaluation centers for good meat
quality.
Enforcer is owned by a group of
herd breeders including Falkands
Farms, Shellsburg; Pudding River
Polled Herefords, Salem, Oregon;
R.W.J. Polled Herefords Ranch,
Georgia; and Wolfe Polled
Herefords, Walla, Washington.
Meanwhile, the twins, which
Becky calls Moe and Joe, are still
on the farm and growing bigger.
