To Take Fair-Time Precautions
Fair-time is rapidly ap
proaching, and this is a good time
to start making necessary
precautions to help prevent the
possibility of you faking diseases to
the fair or bring infections home to
your farm, according to Glenn
Shirk, Dairy Agent. Many fairs
require health charts and specific
tests or vaccinations. Be sure to
read the health regulations
carefully. And, it does not hurt to
be more strict than what the
regulations may require. Animals
with any form of communicable
ailment should be left at home.
This may include such problems
are ringworm, pink eye, warts,
mange, hoof rot, respiratory
problems, scours, etc. With the
presence of pseudorabies in the
county, it would be wise not to have
hogs in close association with any
other livestock. When animals
leave the fair and go home, it is
always good to have a place where'
you can isolate them and observe

To Apply For Gasoline
Tax Refund
I would like to remind our far
mers that application for the
Pennsylvania Liquid Fuel Tax
should be filed by September 30.
Fanners may apply for an 11
cent per gallon refund on all liquid
fuels used in non-licensed tractors
when used off the highway for
agricultural purposes or non
licensed power farm machinery
used for actual farm work. This
includes fuel used in all auxiliary
engines on balers, elevators and
other stationary equipment.
The liquid fuel tax refund is for
all farm production fuel used
between July 1, 1960 and June 30,
1981.
The people who have not already
received applications should apply
by writing: Board of Finance and
‘Revenue, Room 409, Finance
Building, Harrisburg, PA 17120,
giving their full name and address
or by calling 717-787-3365.
Remember, applications
received after September 30 will
not be honored; they must be filed
on time. "
To Apply Lime
Early fall is a good time to apply
lime on open fields. For land that is
to be seeded to legumes in 1982,
now would be the best time to
correct any soil acidity. For lime
to react properly with the soil, it
should be applied well in advance
of a new legume seeding; also, it
should be well mixed with the
topsoil. The soil should be tested to
determine the amount of lime
needed. Keep in mind that heavy
lime trucks can ruin a wet field
next spring. So, give lime a chance
to correct acidity both in terms of
time and mixture.
