COLUMBIA, Mo. - Talk about feed additives for pigs, and you’re likely to strike a nerve. You get comments like “too costly,” “not very effective,” “could work their way through the food cham and be harmful to humans.” The truth, though, is that the jury is still out on all of the above. Swine producers have been using feed additives for 20 or more years. The research that allowed them to get on the market in the first place is often at least that old. “That’s why the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and HEW (Health, Education and Welfare) are interested in collecting current data on feed additives, especially antibiotics,” said Trygve Veum, University of Missouri-Columbia swme researcher. “We know that feed additives are still effective, economical and safe to use for young, growing pigs. But, Veum said, the FDA and HEW are interested in collecting Where's The Water? In Our 200-Gallon Stock Tank! Consumer advocates are con cerned that there could be an tibiotic residue if proper with drawal from the swme ration is not followed, said Veum. Current recommendations call for producers to withdraw some an tibiotics from swme rations at least two weeks before the animals are slaughtered. If the residue was carried through the food cham to humans who consume the pork, these people could become highly sen sitive to the specific antibiotic m the additive. That sensitivity would be a problem when the person is later prescribed that antibiotic by a medical doctor. Another concern is that bacteria resistent to these antibiotics might be passed on to pork consumers. “Antibiotics have been on the market for many years,” said Veum, “and it appears that none of these problems have ever oc curred ” Still, he and other researchers must maintain a scientific vigilance over feed additives to protect jxirk producers and con sumers. Best evidence of this vigilance is a North Central Regional Project to test the additive chlor tetracyclme. “HEW wants new data to sub stantiate the use of this additive m swme rations,” said Veum. “As part of the test, they’ll tie up two Missouri swme operations for two years in controlled ex periments.” i i In other research trials, Veum and George Siwecki, UMC animal scientist, are looking at the biochemical action of the additive carbadox. The additive is designed to increase swine growth and feed efficiency in pigs weighing up to 75- 80 pounds. “We know the additive increases growth by increasing muscle, but Featuring: • Steel-Reinforced Precast Concrete • Simple Installation • Easy Maintenance • Approved by Soil Conservation Service Please send me information on: □ cattleguards □ waterers □ feed bunks name address city • phone CONCRETE SAFETY SYSTEMS,. { Route 1095 state zip Bethel, Pa. 19507 (717) 933-4107 Lancaster Farming, Saturday, August 15,1981—D13 we’re not sure how it does it,” Veum said. “We want to see if the additives improve energy utilization in low energy diets.
