CAMP HILL There is a new
person ‘sitting’ in the Penn
sylvania Farmers’ Association
president’s chair. Keith Eckel, 34,
of Clarks Summit, Lackawanna
County, was elected to the position
by PFA’s 16-member board during
a special meeting held last
Thursday.
Eckel succeeds Eugene
Thompson who resigned the
previous week in order to assume
the position of Acting State
Executive Director of the USDA’s
Agricultural Stabilization and
Conservation Service.

Eckel assumes PFA president post
PFA State Board Director since
1976 (representing four nor
theastern counties), will face
another election for the
organization’s presidency in
November when voting delegates
from the 54 county associations
convene for the annual meeting.
Along with his father and
brother, Eckel assists in the
operation of the family’s dairy and
cash crop farm. They milk 90 head
of Holsteins, sell more than 800
tons of high moisture corn, 100,000
boxes of tomatoes and 400 tons ot
pumpkins annually.

Along with being a director ot the
State Council ot Farm Workers,
Eckel also is on the Governor’s
Seasonal Farm-Labor Committee
and represents the State Vegetable
Growers Association on the
Agricultural Advisory Council at
Penn State.
On resigning his president’s
post, Thompson brings to an end 18
years ot county and state
leadership in PFA. Thompson
served as president of the Indiana
County Farmers’ Association for
five years before he was elected as
PFA second vice president in 1968.
‘He served as vice president of PFA
from 1972 to 1976, when he was
elected president.
