The 7-year-old cow is sired by a ball that carries the Hostetter prefix, Maplebound Kate Gentle Ben, and out of Car-Mont Happy Sharon. With more than 30 years of judging experience, show judge William Etgen summed up the champion of the Lebanon Area Fair Open Dairy Show, held at the fairgrounds Thursday. Etgen, a dairy science professor at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University .at Blacksburg, coaches the University’s Dairy Judging Team, which took first place in national competition this year. Reserve Grand Champion honors went to Dale-Pride Boots Ruthie owned by Annville dairyman, Dale E. Hostetter. His 4-year-old entry, a Boot maker daughter, was also named Reserve Senior Champion. From left to right the group BY SHEILA MILLER LEBANON For the second time this week, Dale-Pnde Boots Ruthie, a 4-year-old Holstein owned and bred by Dale G. Hostetter, Annville, wore a champion’s ribbon on her show halter. Her fust pm came during the Eastern Pennsylvania Holstein Show held at Kutztown on Monday she was selected for reserve grand champion by Judge William Etgen. Then on Thursday, Judge James Shaw of Oley, Berks County chose this Paclamar Bootmaker daughter for grand champion of the Lebanon Area Fair Open Holstein Show. With son Alan at halter, Ruthie topped her class before going on to be named senior champion of the show. She also received the second place Best Udder honors. Ruthie, who’s scored EX-90, was die reserve grand champion at the Lebanon show two years ago. And Inside This Week’s... The Lebanon County Fair isn’t all work and no play. See page A 32. As a 2- year-old, this tremendous cow was given honorable mention recognition in the All- Pennsylvama ranking. Back home on the Hosteller farm in Annville, Ruthie’s record as a 2-year-old stands at 22,700 pounds milk. She is one of the family’s 85 registered milking Holstems. And, Ruthie has some young prospects following in her foot steps. She has a full sister in the yearling bam and another which is still a calf. Unfortunately, says Alan, Ruthie has only produced bull calves. But they haven’t given up hope on her yet. Judge Shaw went to the first place 3-year-old for ins reserve senior and reserve grand cham pion to the delight of 9-year-old David Lentz, the son of Robert and Sandy Lentz, Mount Zion.
