My tnp to Europe was a real
adventure. It was an emotional
experience traveling through the
very areas from which my an
cestors came in the early 1700’s. In
the next few articles, I would like
to share with you some of the
sights which I saw and the places
that I went.
The tour group was composed of
43 other farm folks from Virginia,
New York, Vermont and
Maryland. We not only saw big
cities m five countries, but also
visited dairy farms and farm
homes m most all of these coun
tries.
We traveled first class and
stayed in hotels which charged
from $BO to $lOO per night per
room. For 15 days I lived in the lap
of luxury and had all of my meals
prepared for us. Of course, some
were more ample than others.
Each morning started with a
continental breakfast, courtesy of
the hotel, and included hard rolls,
butter, jelly and coffee or tea. I did
miss my cereal, fruit and milk,
though.
Our one complaint was the lack
of water. Apparently Europeans do
not have water with their meals. So
we were often thirsty, although our
tour guide tried to get pitchers of
water for us. The one thing that
was m ample supply was beer,
wine, scotch and bourbon.

I left New York City at night and
after 7 hours on a plane carrying
some 400 people at 33,000 feet and
traveling 650 miles per hour, we
landed at the Heathrow Airport on
London. A bus took us to our hotel
where we saw lots of other tourists
from Indian and Japan. Some wore
their colorful native costumes.
Never before could I truly un
derstand when my daughters
spoke of “jet lag” but now I do. It
took a bit of resting to make up for
a night’s lost sleep. We turned our
clocks ahead 6 hours by the time
we got to Pans.
Our bus was'brand new and we
were told it cost 62,000 pounds or
about $120,000. We walked through
Westminster Abbey which was
built in 1090 and where many kings
and queens are buned. In the af
ternoon we saw the changing of the
guard at Buckingham Palace and
then drove into the countryside to
visit Windsor Castle which was one
of the first fortresses built to
defend London. It contained many
paintings, gun and sword collec
tions, knight’s armor and ornate
furniture in the huge rooms. We
were shown Piccadilly Circus, Big
Ben, Parliament and the Thames.
