Horsemeat and other equine meat products will be identified with a hexagon shaped inspection mark under a new U.S. Department ot Agriculture regulation. Donald L. Houston, ad ministrator of USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, said current federal meat inspection regulations require that official plants in this country use hexagon shaped inspection marks for equine products, with circle shaped marks applied to other species. The regulation will help stop the accidential or intentional sub stitution ot horse, mule or other equine meat and meat food products for that ot other species, such as cattle, sheep, swine and goats. Previously, all imported meat products had a circle-shaped mark, regardless of the species ot the meat.
