Farming.
Penny hesitated at first to accept
the invitation because she was in
the middle of taking finals alter
completing her first year of nurses
training at the Arnot Ogden
Hospital m Elmira, New York,
But, at the urging of her lather who
told her she would be helping the
dairy industry, she and her
mother, Mrs. Charles Allen, hired
a private plane minted bv Robert
Jenkins from Towanda Aviation,
and made the two hour trip out and
back the same day.
‘ Enthusiasm was the main thrust
ot Penny’s hour-long presentation.
"It you can get the spirit going
and the home town behind you,
everything else goes along with
it,” Penny told the girls. She also

tapes, supermarket promotions,
how to dress, and offered many
other tips on how to be a successful
dairy princess.
Penny also took with her a video
audio tape ot the Bradford County
Dairy Princess Pageant obtained
through the cooperation of the
Troy Area High School.
Penny was made an honorary
member ot the Buckeye Dairy
Boosters, and was presented with a
t-shirt bearing that name.
The Buckeye Dairy Boosters is a
new organization formed by farm
women to promote the sale ot milk.
Since the American Dairy
Association (ADA) stopped
sponsoring the National Dairy
Princess Program years ago, the
entire dairy princess program was
dropped in Ohio. Realizing the
need tor such promotion in their
state, a nucleus ot farm wives are

taking the initiative to organize the
counties for a state-wide Dairy
Princess Program. Obtaining
Penny Alien to speak to the new
princesses and spark the effort
was one of their tirst endeavors.
"Promoting milk will always be
dear to my heart,” Penny said.
"But lor now, my goal is getting
through nurses training.”
Penny and her mother were
instrumental in upgrading the
achievements of the dairy princess
in Bradford County and have been
a great help to Luann Shedden,
1980 princess, and the present
reigning princess, Jean Sheeley,
