Duane Ohnemus, 20-year-old lowa cat tleman, was named National Junior Merit Award winner during the Bth National Junior Polled Hereford Heifer Show and Forum in Hutchinson, Kansas. Ohnemus is a student at lowa State University and is the son ot Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Ohnemus of Milo, lowa. Second place in this national recognition program went to Jom Snapp, 20-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Snapp, West moreland, Kansas. In a tie for third place were J.D. Shanks, 19-year-old son of Dr. and Mrs. Jack Shanks, Mocksville, N.C., and 19-year-old Scott Torrance, son of Mr. and Mrs. Duane Torrance, Media, Illinois. Ohnemus received a $750 scholarship as well as an expense paid, week-long trip to any U.S. Polled Hereford operation of his choice. Miss Snapp won a $5OO scholarship, while Shanks and Torrance shared in the third place scholarship of $250. The recognition the tour received was based on each ap plicant’s outstanding achievements with Polled Heretords, citizenship activities and personal development. Ohnemus, an animal science major, was cited tor the aggressive way he had invested his cattle and farming profits to acquire halt-interest m a Polled Hereford herd numbering nearly 200 head and the purchase ot a 118- acre farm. He was active in FFA and holds memberships in local, state and national cattlemen’s associations. Ohnemus, described m the award presentation as a young KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Exhibitors from 28 states and Canada once again drew a capacity crowd to the National Junior Polled Hereford Heifer Show and Forum for a week-long extravaganza of showing, leadership training, family fun, entertainment, education and fierce competition. The Bth National Junior classic drew 404 head of Polled Hereford heifers to Hutchinson, Kansas, July 19-24, with 280 youthful exhibitors displaying their best. Grand championship of the show, which featured only heifers born in 1980, went to 19-year-old Gerard Palaschuk, Wishart, Sask., on WP Miss Enforcer M 57, a March daughter of Gold Standard Sire enforcer 107 H. Reserve grand championship honors went to 17-year-old Greg Billing, Little Falls, N.Y., on ASB Bo Ten, a January daughter of Gold Trophy Sire Will-Via Justa V. The championship line-up was composed of some of the breed’s top heifers, traveling from all comers of the country for the competition. A team of three well known cattle judges had the task of appraising the heifers and picking the champions. Snapp has served as her local 4- top spot. In addition to breeding the champion heifer, Palaschuk Farms was the breeder of some of the show’s other high-ranking heifers, earning them the event’s Premier Breeder title. The reserve grand champion, ASB Bo Ten, is no newcomer to the winner’s circle.
