MILLPORT In this day and age of prefabricated, metal
sided barns, this scene at the Jacob Stoltzfus farm, along Log
Cabin Road near Millport, Lancaster County conjures up
memories of the way things used to be done down on the farm
and thankfully still are in some communities.
Scrambling up ladders, across rafters, and like cats on a roof,
this barn raising crew combines skillfully-wielded hammers and
amazing teamwork to pm these timbers together in short order.
Each crew member uses his form in attacking the con
struction job there’s the ‘on your mark’ form, as demon
strated by the two pictured to the left; and there’s the rafter
perch and rafter clutch, depending on age and experience,
above. Some stride across rafters and lath to get the job done,
while others deftly pound away from a ladder's vantage point.
The team seemed to enjoy the hard work, at least the sun
shine and blue skies made it a pleasant day for building another
timbered tribute to farming. (Photos by Stan Hall.)
