C2o—Lancaster Famine, Saturday, July 25,1911 Fan, food and winners abound at the Shippensburg Fair BY DEBBIE KOONTZ SHIPPENSBURG - This small, college town in the lush green heart of the Cumberland Valley held its community fair this week with shows and rides ending today. Arts and crafts were entered by neighbors surrounding the area and prizes awarded for the best quilts, and homemade jams and jellies, making much of the fair seem like an old treasured picture such as Norman Rockwell would paint. But the rides, the games and the delicious ox roast sandwiches weren’t the only attraction this year as members of three FFA Chapters and one 4-H club gathered for livestock and dairy judging swine judging being one of the largest in the area with 108 entrants. The first half of the week was devoted to five breeds of dairy cattle and market livestock. Breeding sheep and Holsteins had their share of attention on Thur sday. The market animals were sold on Tuesday night. Hatfield Packing of Soudertown purchased the Grand Champion Hog, a 227 pound Duroc selling for $2.50 per pound. The hog was shown by Bruce Lemmon Jr, a 14- year-old Big Spring FFA member and son of Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Lemmon. Purchasing the Reserve Champion was Country Butcher Shop of Plainfield for $1 a pound. This hog was shown by Bruce Lemmon also. Both Grand Champion hogs . Bruce Lemmon Jr. of Big Spring FFA walked away from the ring with double honors. Here he stands with the Grand Champion hog. Reserve Champion for 4-H went to Tammy Burruss. Wayne Craig and Sons of Shippensburg bought the Grand Champion market lamb, a Suffolk owned by Melissa Walker of Newville. The lamb sold for $1 a pound and weighed 100 pounds. Reserve Grand Champion title went to Angie Fought of Carlisle for her Hampshire lamb The Champion FFA market lamb, a Suffolk, was owned by Sharon Hock of Newville. Reserve Champion FFA market lamb was shown by Greg Rausch of Carlisle. This lamb was a Hampshire. The Grand Champion steer, owned by Brent Upperman, 17, of Chambersburg, was sold to Wayne Craig and Sons of Shippensburg. Brent is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Upperman. Reserve champion awards went to Glen Hostetler, 15, of Mechanicsburg for his Angus Chianina. Glen is the son of Earl and Inez Hostetler.
