Disillusionment.”
Maybe it was the gray hair that

But, gee, I don’t feel old. Except
for those 90 degree days with 95
percent humidity that find us

nights that I found the gray hair.
One lone hair wouldn’t bother me.
But it isn’t the very first. And I
know full well it won’t be the last.

However, there are drawbacks,
says Dennis J. Murphy, Extension
safety specialist, The Penn
sylvania State University.
Starting charcoal can be
troublesome and the burning tune
required may cause hungry people
to become impatient.
Charcoal lighter fluid is con
venient and easy to use. Do not use
fuel oil, kerosene, or gasoline,
cautions Murphy. They are not
only dangerous, but they may
produce a smoke that gives an oily
taste to the food.
To start charcoal with lighter
fluid, heap the amount of charcoal
needed in the firebox and spray it

My pointed-toe shoes from two
decades ago are coming back into
style again.
Then the kids pinned a new label
on me one day not long ago, when
they couldn’t find anything or
anyone else to pester as vacation is
becoming boring.
"Mom, you’re an oldie but a
goodie.” “Old, old, 01d... over the
hill.”
While they might label me oldy
they’d just best not forget that I’m
still fast enough to catch them with
a gentle reminder about who’s still
boss.

saturate the charcoal, then light it.
Let it burn about 20-25 minutes
before starting to cook. With good
quality charcoal you will not see
any flame, just a grey ash that
shows up around the edges of the

for cooking.
Treat charcoal with caution.
Don’t let the absence of flame fool
you. The grey ash hides a very hot
fire and should be handled with
tongs. Even a tiny fleck or two of
the ash is enough to cause a serious
burn, reminds Murphy.
