A34—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, July 18,1981 Ram sale record (Continued from Page Al) after auctioneer Rollie Rosen boom’s gavel fell. Calling for bids, the lamb’s price quickly jumped into the thousands of dollars. And, one by one, Rosenboom entreated the two bidders to “go one more.’’ As this piece by piece bidding slowly moved into the ‘2os’, then ‘3os’, a murmured chuckle could be heard from the crowd of buyers and consignors. “If that’s the way we have to do it, we will,” announced the auc tioneer, and the crowd grew in tensely silent. All eyes were on the two contending bidders, watching the nods as another hundred was added to the price tag. All the while Culham knealt next to the ram lamb, keeping him set up to perfection for the future buyer’s eye. Even when the bid ding stalled at $4,700, Culham and the ram kept cooL After several entreaties from Rosenboom, the contending bidder gave in and went another hundred. Then, m rapid succession that was hard to keep up with, the bidding jumped to $6,000. That was too much for the contending bidder who dropped out of the race. When the auctioneer sounded the final call, Eberts became the new owner of Lot 532. He noted this ram is the “nght breeding and fits my bloodlines”, pointing out his sire, Quasar, is from the Big Joe and Olsen breeding. “He should have been champion,” claimed Eberts. What was Culham’s reaction to this high-priced demand for Jus ram? grateful disbelief. “I would have been thrilled with $2,000,” he laughed. “It would have been fine with me even if the bidding had stopped at $4,700. “Auctions are crazy. You just never know, do you? If I had asked those two guys for a price of $6,000 before the sale, they would have walked away laughing. ’ ’ Culham, who has been raising sheep since he was 9-years-old and now owns 90 registered Suffolks and 300 commercial ewes, said this is "undoubtedly” the highest price he’s ever received for a lamb, especially a third place one.
