Delegates suggest
HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - To
adulterate or not to adulterate
that’s not the question! Rather,
the question is what official sen
sitivity test should be used in
antibiotic detection in milk.
At the 18th National Conference
on Interstate Milk Shipments, in
Arkansas this spring, more than
250 delegates agreed to suggest to
the FDA to change the official test,
Sarcma lutea cylinder plate
method, to a lesser involved
method, Bacillus stearother
mophilus disc assay said G.
William Fouse, Pennsylvania’s
Chief of Division of Milk
Sanitation.
Carol Wallace, laboratory
director for OMS explained that
the suggested Bacillus assay is
somewhat shorter test which takes
almost four hours to run. Mean
while, the official FDA Sarcma
test is generally an overnight
method.
However, Fouse said, if ap
proved, the proposed method will

their load is adulterated.
The delegates also decided on a
tolerance for Grade A milk and
other dairy products.
In the pasta, 14 milimeter zone of
bacterial growth inhibition was
considered a positive reaction for
antibiotics in a milk sample.
The delegates approved a
laboratory committee report
which reccommended using a
larger zone, 16mm. However,
Fouse pointed out that the rec
commended level is comparable to
the official FDA Sarcma test level.
“The point is really trying to
establish a realistic level that the
milk would be considered to be
adulterated,” he said.
The milk sanitation chief
strongly emphasized that the
proposed test and level will “very,
very safely protect the public.”
No deadline to date has been
established for an FDA decision,
said Fouse.
